ASTM E2406 : 2016 – Method for Evaluation of Laundry Sanitizers and Disinfectants for Use in High-Efficiency Washing Operations

ASTM E2406 is employed to assess efficacy of laundry disinfectant formulations utilized in high efficiency automatic clothes washing operations. This standard determines whether a tested laundry sanitizer/ disinfectant is capable of killing microbial populations on contaminated textiles after a single wash under simulated low wash volume conditions.

ASTM E2406 method is designed for testing vegetative bacteria, but it can also be used for testing viruses and fungi.

ASTM E2406 Test Conditions & Requirement

  • Mandatory test microorganisms – Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 4352), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538P)
  • Contact time –  Less than 5 minutes
  • Interfering substance – Heat inactivated fetal bovine serum or mixture of tryptone, bovine serum albumin and mucin
  • Passing criteria  – Product must demonstrate 10 log reduction of the respective test microorganisms.

ASTM E2406 Test Method

  • Test fabrics (carriers) are contaminated with bacterial test suspension and allowed to dry out.

  • Dried inoculated carriers are placed into sterile ballast fabric and subjected to the disinfection process for specific times recommended by the manufacturer.

  • At the end of the disinfection process, ballasts with the carriers are taken out and each carrier is further transferred into a tube containing neutralizing solution.

  • Recovered neutralizing extract is enumerated and reduction in microorganisms is calculated. Test product must achieve at least 10 log reduction values against mandatory test microorganisms.

Importance of ASTM E2406 Test

Numerous factors can contribute to the microbial contamination of textile materials. This mainly includes wearing, laundering, contact with contaminated surfaces, infected individuals, body secretions, etc. This subsequently raises the risk of cross-contamination and outbreaks.
Proper washing of microbially contaminated clothes is essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing the spread of pathogens.

ASTM E2406 standard provides guidance on the evaluation of the microbicidal activity of sanitizers/disinfectants used for textile hygiene in healthcare and other varied industries.

At MIS, we specialize in providing customized antimicrobial (bactericidal and virucidal) testing solutions for disinfectant/antiseptic products utilized for disinfection processes in medical settings and similar environments. With our cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure and extensive industry knowledge, we are capable of delivering accurate and reliable results.

Additionally, we perform ASTM E2274 test for evaluation of laundry sanitizers and disinfectants.
