EN 17658:2022 - Evaluation of chemical textile disinfectants for domestic area

EN 17658 specifies the microbicidal efficacy of chemical products used in wash processes in domestic washing equipment at temperature of 40°C or lower.

Application

Applicable for laundry chemical disinfectants intended for domestic wash processes.
  • Cotton textile carriers are contaminated with bacterial suspension and allowed to dry.
  • The dried carriers are subjected to a domestic disinfection process.
  •  After the disinfection process, carriers are neutralized.
  • The neutralized extract is plated to assess microbial reduction in test samples compared to untreated controls.

Turnaround Time

It typically takes 3-4 weeks.
Results are evaluated by comparing the microbial reduction in treated textile samples to untreated controls.

Passing criteria

The product must achieve at least a 4-log reduction in bacteria and a 3-log reduction in Candida albicans on contaminated carriers.

Abstract

EN 17658 outlines the procedure  to evaluate the  microbicidal effectiveness of a chemical product designed for  washing processes within  domestic settings. The test method is  evaluated using a domestic washing equipment at lower temperatures (up to 40 °C).

EN 17658 serves as a phase 2, step 2 test method mimicking the practical conditions to evaluate the efficacy of chemical disinfectants under controlled laboratory conditions.

EN 17658 Test Conditions & Requirement

Minimum test conditions and parameters specified by EN 17658 are as follows –

EN 17658 Test Method

  • Cotton fabric (textile carriers) are  contaminated with bacterial test suspension in BSA (bovine serum albumin). Inoculated fabric is allowed to dry out.
  • Dried inoculated textile carriers are  subjected to  domestic disinfection process in a tumbling lab testing device containing textile ballast load.
  • Upon the completion of the disinfection process, textile  carriers are transferred into a neutralizer solution to stop further activity.  Neutralizer solution is shaken at a rate of 1 000 rpm  to extract the remaining trapped microorganisms from the carriers.
  • Neutralizing extract with the recovered bacteria  is  plated to determine the  reduction in microorganisms from treated samples in  comparison to an untreated control.

Importance of EN 17658 Test

Washing garments at temperature ≤ 40 °C  has been observed to result in incomplete microbial decontamination after the washing processes. However, certain clothes require washing at lower temperatures and with gentle cycles to maintain the integrity of their design. Laundry chemical disinfectants have been developed to ensure complete hygiene while restoring the overall appearance of clothes under specified conditions.

The EN 17658 standard assists in evaluating the microbicidal  efficacy of chemical disinfectants used in laundry processes that operate  at temperatures lower than 40°C.
