BS EN 1657 : 2016 – Quantitative Suspension Test for the Evaluation of Fungicidal or Yeasticidal activity of Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics
EN 1657 (phase 2, step 1) is used to determine the fungicidal or yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics intended for use in the veterinary field.
Pathogens harboring veterinary areas are more likely to cause infections among animals, veterinarians, and workers of animals. Disinfection is a crucial practice for ensuring hygiene and reducing the risk of disease outbreaks in veterinary fields including hospitals and animal houses.
Only disinfectants which are tested for their efficacy claims under practical conditions should be used for routine cleaning and disinfection. EN 1657 test is applicable to products used for disinfection purposes in veterinary areas. This may include the following areas/situations –
- breeding,
- husbandry,
- production,
- transport,
- and disposal of animals.
EN 1657 Test Conditions & Requirements
- Mandatory test microorganisms: Fungicidal activity – Aspergillus niger (ATCC-16888), Yeasticidal activity – Candida Albicans (MTCC 3017)
- Test temperature – 10 °C
- Contact time – 30 mins
- Interfering substance:
- Low-level soiling – 3g/l bovine albumin solution and/or any relevant substance
- High-level soiling – 10g/l yeast extract + 10 g/l bovine albumin solution and/or any relevant substance
- Log reduction – Must demonstrate 4 log reduction
EN 1657 Test Method
- Product sample is added to test suspension of microorganisms in a solution of an interfering substance.
- The mixture is allowed to interact for a specific period of time.
- 1 ml of mixture is further transferred to a neutralizing solution.
- After neutralization, final mixture is incubated for 2 days to check if any viable microorganisms are present.
- Colonies are enumerated and compared to control samples.
