ISO 22718: 2015 - Detection of Staphylococcus aureus in Cosmetic products
Application
Mandatory test strains
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Test samples are inoculated into an enrichment medium and incubated. Subsequently, they are cultured on selective and differential media.
- After incubation, plates are examined for colonial morphology of Staphylococcus aureus, , and additional identification tests are performed to confirm its presence.
- Detects the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, a pathogen that can cause skin infections and other health issues.
- Helps manufacturers meet global regulatory standards for cosmetic safety, ensuring market access.

Abstract
ISO 22718 is a standard test method for the detection and identification of the specified microorganism Staphylococcus aureus in a given cosmetic sample.
ISO 22718 test method helps to analyze the specific microbial burden on the basis of presence or absence of Staphylococcus aureus in a non-selective liquid medium (enrichment broth), followed by isolation on a selective agar medium.
ISO 22718 Test Method
- The product sample is initially grown in an enrichment broth to increase the microbial population.
- For water-miscible products, 1 ml of product sample is dispersed in 9 ml of enrichment broth. For water-immiscible products, 1g of product sample is premixed with a dispersing agent (e.g. polysorbate 80) and then dispersed in 9 ml of enrichment broth. For filterable products, filtration is performed before adding in the enrichment broth.
- The enrichment medium is incubated at 32.5 °C for 24 to 48 hrs and observed, followed by growth on selective and differential medium.
- The presence or absence of staphylococcus aureus is concluded only at the end of all the observations.
- After incubation, petri plates are examined for colonial morphology of Staphylococcus aureus. This is followed by other suitable, cultural and biochemical tests to confirm the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. The presence or absence of staphylococcus aureus is concluded only at the end of all the observations.
Importance of ISO 22718 Test
ISO 22718 standard applies to cosmetic products and personal care products. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common microorganisms in cosmetics and personal care products. It is a gram-positive microorganism and a potential pathogen that can adversely affect human health. The presence of pathogenic microorganisms in cosmetic products poses a health risk for consumers.
Therefore, microbial analysis of cosmetic products needs to be carried out to safeguard customer health as well as maintain product quality among the customers.
