BS EN 14349: 2012 – Quantitative Surface Test for the Evaluation of Bactericidal Activity of Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics used in the Veterinary area
EN 14349 test determines the efficacy of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics developed using bactericidal agents. This test is applicable to products to be used in the area of veterinary situations on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action.
Despite being easy to disinfect, non-porous surfaces in veterinary settings are the most common reservoir of pathogens. Therefore, products used for surface disinfectants should be capable of killing or inactivating many or the most common pathogenic microorganisms.
European Standard – EN 14349 is designed to evaluate the bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action (phase 2, step 2). EN 14349 test method specifies mandatory test requirements including test organisms, contact time, temperature, and interfering substances for clean and dirty conditions.
EN 14349 Test Conditions & Requirement
- Test temperature – 10 °C
- Contact time – 30 mins
- Log reduction – ≥ 4
EN 14349 Test Method
- Bacterial inoculation and interfering substance are spread onto the metal disc surface.
- On the dried inoculated surface, disinfectant sample is added and allowed to interact for a specified contact period time. In parallel, a test is performed for control where water is used instead of disinfectant sample.
- At the end of the contact period, metal disc is transferred to the neutralizing solution to stop the bactericidal activity.
- A portion of neutralizing solution is plated and incubated for 2 days to determine remaining viable bacterial cells.
- The number of bacterial colonies found on test samples are compared with control.
At MIS, we design and perform antimicrobial efficacy tests for a wide range of disinfectant and antiseptic formulations. We have a team of microbiology professionals and technical experts who are continuously betrothed in understanding & analyzing testing requirements and creating test protocols for disinfectant testing.
Also, other available and most frequently performed tests in MIS labs are EN 1040 and EN 1276 for antibacterial disinfectant efficacy testing.
