BS EN 17122 : 2019 – Quantitative non-porous surface test for evaluating the virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area.
EN 17122 lays out a surface test method for assessing the virucidal activity of a given chemical disinfectant or antiseptic intended to be used in the veterinary areas.
EN 17122 : 2019 is a phase-2 step-2 test for any antiviral disinfectant testing intended to be used in the following area and/or situation in veterinary setting –
- breeding, husbandry, production,
- veterinary care facilities,
- transport,
- and disposal of all animals except when in the food chain.
The test parameters have been formulated to closely mimic the practical application condition for the disinfectant.
EN 17122 Test Conditions & Requirements
The parameters specified by EN 17122 standard are as follows:
Test conditions | |
Test organism (viral strains) | Porcine Parvovirus (Full virucidal activity) Feline coronavirus (Activity against enveloped viruses) |
Contact Time (Minutes) | Minimum: 1 to Maximum: 120 |
Other Contact times indicated by standards (Minutes) | 5, 15, 30, and 60 |
Test Temperature (mandatory) | 10 °C |
Additional Temperature Indicated by standards | 4, 20, and 40 °C |
Interfering substance | Low level 0.3 g/l Bovine Albumin High Level 3.0 g/l Bovine Albumin |
Passing criteria (Log reduction) | The product must show at least 3 log reduction in infectivity |
EN 17122 Test Method
- A virus suspension with the interfering substances is inoculated onto a test surface and dried.
- The surface with the dried virus film is then covered with the disinfectant sample (test sample) or hard water (control sample) and kept at a specific temperature for a defined period (contact time).
- After the contact time, the test surfaces are transferred to a cell maintenance medium to neutralise the action of the disinfectant and recover the residual virus.
- The titer of the virus recovered from the test surface is then determined by serially diluting the recovered virus and plating it on a permissive host cell line for a defined period of time.
Importance of EN 17122 Test
EN 17122 guideline helps in evaluating the efficacy of disinfectant/antiseptic products in preventing the transmission and spread of any viral disease in the veterinary area. The disinfectant sample passing the EN 17122 test will help to maintain a safe and healthy animal environment. EN 17122 also serves as the standard testing guideline for the registration and selling of the disinfectant sample in the European zone and some additional countries.
At MIS, all the antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal testing services follow international standards and guidelines. With the help of our qualified staff and certified advanced laboratory set-up, we ensure to provide precise, reliable, and expeditious services to our clients.
