ASTM E2755: Test Method for Antibacterial Healthcare Personnel Hand Rub Formulations
ASTM E2755 provides a standardized test method to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of alcohol-based handrubs.
Given the importance of preventing infections within healthcare environments, this test method helps to ensure that hand sanitizers meet rigorous efficacy standards.
Test Conditions & Requirements of ASTM E2755
Mandatory test microorganisms – Serratia marcescens or Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538P)
ASTM E2755 Test Method
- The test is performed on the hands of volunteers who have no visible signs of damage and haven’t used any antimicrobial product for at least one week before the test
- After an initial hand cleaning, the hands of participants are exposed to a specific test microorganism, and the starting baseline count of microorganisms is determined. The antibacterial activity is assessed following either a single application or multiple consecutive contamination/application cycles within a single day.
- The antibacterial efficacy is determined by comparing the number of test bacteria present on the hands after the product use to the viable bacteria found after using a reference control.
Importance of ASTM E 2755
Hand hygiene is a fundamental aspect of preventing infections in healthcare environments, and the ASTM E2755 standard plays a crucial role in ensuring its effectiveness.
Pathogens can be transmitted via the hands of healthcare workers, making effective hand hygiene practices critical for patient safety. Alcohol-based handrubs are an effective and convenient way to ensure hand hygiene, provided they are effective against a wide range of pathogens.
The ASTM E2755 test method is a crucial tool in ensuring the effectiveness of alcohol-based handrubs in healthcare settings. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and healthcare providers can play a vital role in preventing Hospital-acquired infections (HAI) and protecting patient and healthcare worker safety.
